John Charles Cash
John Charles Cash, Killed May 15, 1913
As part of his duties, he was suppose to light the arc lamp located on the corner of Main Street and West Cleveland Avenue which was in front of the Citizens Bank. Officer Cash usually arced the lamp on about dark. In order to light the lamp, the Officer had to use a chain to arc the Lamp to burn. During this lighting process, Officer Cash was pulling the metal chain when his hand touched an exposed wire causing him to become grounded. He was electrocuted about dark on May 15, 1913.

Jack Parker, Killed July 28, 1929

Officer Parker was killed in a motorcycle accident while on patrol. He was not wearing a helmet because they were not required or considered a piece of safety gear at the time.

Officer Parker had been with the department for four years, and was 30 years old.

Earl Lee Vickery
Earl Lee Vickery, Killed November 20, 1938
Officer Vickery was killed in a motorcycle accident while chasing a violator. During the chase he was thrown from the motorcycle into the path of a moving trolley. He was not wearing a helmet as they were not required or considered a piece of safety equipment at the time.

Officer Vickery had been with the department for three years and was 31 years old.

George Clifford Burnett III, Killed July 16, 1966

Officer Burnett was shot and killed by the suspect who had murdered another police officer the previous day. Officer Burnett was struck in the chest. The suspect was released from a mental hospital after staying there for only ten years.

Officer Burnett had been with the department for one year, and was 26 years old.

Joseph F. Sykes Jr.
Joseph F. Sykes Jr., Killed June 2, 1969
Officer Sykes was killed in a motorcycle accident while responding to another accident. A vehicle struck his motorcycle, causing a fatal head injury. Officer Sykes was not wearing a helmet as they were not required or considered a piece of safety equipment at the time.

Officer Sykes had been with the department for three years, and was 24 years old.

Christopher R. Betts, Killed December 22, 2002

Officer Betts was struck by several vehicles and killed while he and another officer struggled with a suspect on the side of I-285 at 0100 hours. The officers had gone to the location to investigate a suspicious person. While talking with the man a struggle ensued and spilled into the travel lane. Both officers and the suspect were struck by three vehicles. Officer Betts and the suspect were killed and the second officer was critically injured and flown to a local hospital. One of the three vehicles that struck the men fled the scene.
